A way to remember: Interview with Ian Durkin.
En su web dice: Mi nombre es Ian, trabajo para Vimeo y disfruto compartiendo historias sobre lo que pasa aquí en el noreste con fotos y vídeos. Me parece que es una buena forma de recordar.
Ian Durkin trabaja para Vimeo ayudando a que crezca la comunidad de usuarios de los vídeos, con sus pequeños cortos sobre diferentes historias que giran en torno al skate, el surf, la naturaleza, la aventura… que retratan esas permanentes vacaciones y sensaciones con las que todos soñamos.
La envidia es máxima y cualquiera cogería e iría con él a recorrer las diferentes zonas de la zona noreste para participar en las historias que se cuentan a través de sus vídeos e historias. Le gusta escribir, dibujar, sacar fotos y hacer vídeos, pero solo por diversión; ha tenido suerte y ha hecho de esto su trabajo y su forma de vida.

Ian Durkin works for Vimeo helping to provide support to the growing online video community through his short-films about the differents stories revolves around skate, surf, nature, adventure… portraying these permanent vacation and feelings with which we all dream.
Anyone would take the backpack and go with him to this little trips and participate in the histories behind the videos. He like writing, drawing and take photos and make videos, but just for fan; he has been lucky and he made his passion a lifestyle.
1. ¿Cómo empieza todo este viaje y cómo empieza tu trabajo para vimeo? // How it began this journey and how and when you started working for vimeo?
Estoy en mi cuarto año en Vimeo. Siempre he usado el sitio para compartir mi trabajo y realmente me gusta la comunidad en Vimeo y creí que sería un buen lugar para trabajar. Resultó ser genial.
I’m going on my fourth year at Vimeo now. I’ve always used the site to share my own work and I really liked the community on Vimeo and thought that it’d be a fun place to work. It’s turned out to be great.
2. ¿Cómo es un día en la vida de Ian Durkin? // How is a day in Ian Durkin’s life?
Me despierto a las 8 de la mañana y voy en bici desde Brooklyn hasta Manhattan donde se encuentra la oficina de Vimeo. En ocasiones paro para hacer algo de skate en el L.E.S skatepark durante una hora con mis amigos, desayuno algo y veo algunos vídeos durante unas horas. Después de comer, respondo emails y sigo viendo vídeos. Suelo dejar la oficina alrededor de las 7 de la tarde y me voy a casa a hacer la cena. Después de cenar comienzo a trabajar en el proyecto de foto o vídeo que tenga pendiente en el momento antes de dormir y luego dormito un poco.
I usually wake up in the morning around 8 a.m. and ride my bike from Brooklyn to Manhattan where the Vimeo office is. Sometimes I stop and skate at the L.E.S. skatepark on the way for an hour or so with friends. When I get to the office, I get some breakfast and watch some videos for a few hours. After lunch, I answer emails and do some more watching. I usually leave the office around 7 p.m. and make some dinner at home. After dinner I start working on whatever photo or video project I have going on at the moment until bedtime and then I do some snoozing.
3. A través de las fotos y el vídeo se quedan plasmadas las vivencias, y permanecen como recuerdos y es lo que haces, pero, ¿crees que hay una sobresaturación de fotos en Internet? De compartir demasiado cosas sin importancia? // Through photos and videos, the experiences are recorded and are part of our memories. Do you think there is a saturation of pictures on the Internet? To share too unimportant things?
Totalmente. Cualquiera es fotógrafo hoy en día y muchas cosas son documentadas por el bien de la documentación. Dicho esto, la fotografía es divertida, así que es genial que adentrarse en ella sea fácil ahora que los iPhones tienen buenas cámaras y todas esas cosas.
Oh totally. Everyone is a photographer these days and lots of things are documented for documentation’s sake. That said, photography is fun, so it’s great that getting into it is so easy now that iPhones have nice cameras built in and stuff.
4. Te manejas con el vídeo y en tu web hay fotos en digital y analógico. ¿Qué estudiaste? ¿ O eres un autodidacta con estilo? // You make videos and on your website there are digital and analog photos. What did you study? Or are you a stylish self-taught?
Estudié historia y psicología, así que sí, supongo que soy autodidacta.
I studied history and psychology in school. So yeah, I suppose I’m just self-taught.
5. Te encargas tú del montaje del vídeo, grabación, realización… o cuentas con un equipo? O, con algo mejor, ¿amigos que te quieran echar un cable? // You handle everything by yourself, or do you have a team or something better, friends to help you?
Depende del proyecto. Me gusta que me echen una mano en casi todo, pero disfruto realmente trabajando con diferentes cámaras y músicos para que lo que tengo en mente cobre vida.
It depends on the project. I like to have a hand on most everything, but really enjoy working with different filmers and musicians to make what I have in mind come to life.
6. ¿En qué viajas y qué llevas contigo siempre? / / How do you travel and what do you carry with you always?
Viajo en bici, avión, tren y coche. Siempre llevo conmigo la cartera, el teléfono móvil, las llaves, un bloc de notas y un bolígrafo. Siempre viajo con la cámara en mano. Así que aunque sea por trabajo, es divertido documentar los viajes con fotos y vídeo.
I travel by bicycle, plane, train and automobile. I always carry my wallet, cell phone, keys, a note pad and a pen. I’ve always traveled with a camera in hand. So even if it’s for work, it’s fun to document travels with photographs and video.
7. Cuéntanos, ¿qué es exactamente Big Foot Country? // Tell us, what is exactly Big Foot Country?
Bigfoot Country es una región inespecífica de la tierra en el extremo norte de la Columbia Británica. Básicamente es el tipo de lugar donde no te sorprendería ver a un Bigfoot.
Bigfoot Country is an unspecific region of land in the northern reaches of British Columbia. Basically, it’s the kind of spot you wouldn’t be surprised to have a Bigfoot sighting.
8. Skate, surf, amigos, playa, cervezas, bbq, mar… ¿Qué respondes cuando alguien te pregunta cuál es tu trabajo? // Skate, surf, friends, Beach, bear, bbq, sea… What do you say when someone asks you, what’s your job?
Les digo a la gente que trabajo para el sitio web vimeo y que hago algún trabajo de fotografía y vídeos en el sitio.
I usually tell people that I work for the website Vimeo and do some photo and video work on the site.
